Audio Note vs MacWhisper vs Superwhisper
MacWhisper transcribes files. Superwhisper types into other apps. Audio Note captures meetings, system audio, and files on Mac and Windows. Pick by the job, not the brand.
Three tools, three jobs
People searching for a Whisper desktop app usually want one of these:
- Drop a recording in, get a transcript and subtitles
- Talk, and have text appear in the app they are already using
- Capture a live meeting or anything the computer is playing, keep the archive, then turn it into notes
MacWhisper is built for (1). Superwhisper is built for (2), with file transcription as a side path. Audio Note is built for (3), and also does (1).
If you only need (1) on a Mac, MacWhisper is enough. The rest of this page is for when the job is bigger than a file picker.

MacWhisper's gap is live capture. Superwhisper's gap is the meeting archive. Audio Note's gap is "type into whatever app has focus" compared with Superwhisper.
When MacWhisper is the right answer
You have interviews or podcast files. You want a Mac GUI over Whisper, SRT/VTT out, and no extra workspace. You do not need Zoom, Teams, or system audio.
That is a smaller product, and that is fine. Paying for a meeting stack you will not open is wasted money.
When Superwhisper is the right answer
You write emails, tickets, and docs by speaking. The output should land in Mail, VS Code, or a browser. You may also drop the occasional file in.
Superwhisper also has a Windows app, so it is not Mac-only. It is still a dictation tool first. If your source is a two-hour call, you will feel the missing archive, speaker labels, and note workflow.
When Audio Note is the right answer
The audio is the work: meetings, lectures, app playback, batches of files, links. You want the transcript to stay in one place and become notes without a cloud meeting bot.
Typical cases:
- Zoom / Teams / Meet without inviting a notetaker
- Capturing what the machine is playing, not only the mic
- Windows as well as Mac
- Watch folders for incoming recordings
- Export to SRT, VTT, Markdown, then an AI pass for summaries
Core transcription runs locally. If you turn on a cloud AI backend for rewriting, that part leaves the machine. Keep it local if the meeting cannot leave the device.
Otter and other cloud notetakers
Otter, Fireflies, and similar tools join the call and send audio to a server. They are convenient when everyone accepts a bot in the room.

Do not pick from a WER table on a blog. Take one of your own recordings, run five minutes through the two tools still in play, and keep the one you will actually open tomorrow.
